The History of the Course
The History of Atatürk's Principles and Reforms course began to be taught in the early years of the Republic in order to ensure that the founding philosophy of the Republic of Türkiye is understood by new generations and that they are raised with the same philosophy. Although the course was given different names in various periods, in accordance with the Higher Education Law of 6 November 1981 it has continued to be taught as a compulsory course in all universities under the name “History of Atatürk's Principles and Reforms”.
The Aim and Content of the Course
In addition to providing an overview of recent Turkish history, the course aims to help students grasp the place this historical process occupies in world history and within developments around the world. Both the developments the Ottoman Empire experienced within itself and its embarking on reforms in the face of modernization movements in the world initiated the historical process that took place. By the 20th century, a modernist generation had emerged in the process leading to the collapse of the Empire. This generation gave direction both to the administration of the country and to the reforms carried out. This period, which was also the laboratory in which the Republic flourished, led to the Ottoman Empire completing its political life along with the wars experienced, while enabling the establishment of the modern Republic of Türkiye. The Turkish National Struggle waged against the occupations enabled the establishment of the modern Republic of Türkiye and opened the doors to a new era in Turkish history.
The History of Atatürk's Principles and Reforms course covers, within the stated historical process and under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the process leading to the establishment of the Republic of Türkiye, and the principles and reforms that enabled the establishment of the modern state after liberation, along with the political developments experienced. Given the point Turkish history has reached, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and the Republic of Türkiye will be analyzed and understood on the axis of the science of history. The course aims to raise generations who can grasp the spirit and goals of the Turkish revolution and who will also carry it forward.
“Those who have grasped the aim of the revolution will always have the power to protect it.”
