Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences
Science arose as a result of people's efforts to understand the nature and natural events that make up their environment, to meet their needs, and to abstract these from supernatural forces. Science, often used in the same sense as the word knowledge, is defined as knowledge obtained through method and confirmed by testing. The gradual proliferation of knowledge to a degree that cannot be grasped by a single person has led to the emergence of an increasing number of scientific disciplines. It is possible to divide these scientific disciplines into two parts: the natural sciences and the social sciences.
Engineering, characterized as a natural science, previously could not surpass muscle power, but today it has succeeded in surpassing brainpower. The development of arm power, steam engines and electrical machines led to the industrial revolution, while from the second half of the twentieth century the production, storage and transmission of information caused the information revolution. This process of change has given rise to new concepts and methods in terms of engineering. The fundamental aim of the Istanbul Galata University Faculty of Engineering, established on 17 August 2023, is to train individuals who have assimilated engineering subjects, who have acquired the ability to apply them, who are committed to work ethics, who are ready for global competition, and who are innovative, entrepreneurial and creative.
Our Faculty, which will begin education in the 2024-2025 academic year with the philosophy of raising individuals who have embraced the principles of the Republic, who are committed to Atatürk's principles and reforms, who share the common values of humanity, who are socially and culturally developed, who are aware of their social responsibilities, who are self-confident, and who are not only interested in technology but are also entrepreneurial, includes the Department of Computer Engineering.
Department of Computer Engineering
Computer engineering, which is among the group of professions where knowledge and skills related to development, change and diversification must be kept up to date and where lifelong education is mandatory, is defined as a field of expertise covering the scientific and technological knowledge required in the design, development and maintenance of the hardware and software components of information systems and computer-aided applications.
The Computer Engineering program has been created taking into account national and regional workforce needs as well as the criteria defined by international academic and professional organizations. In addition to providing technical knowledge, the program, with its structure that also enhances analysis and design skills, aims to place emphasis on the basic science and engineering rules that teach how to learn. It is believed that our students will take their places as preferred Computer Engineers in the information world, with the application experience they gain alongside strong theoretical knowledge.
Department of Computer Engineering
Definition
The Department of Computer Engineering carries out education, training and research on computer system structure, development and effective use methods. In today's world, characterized as the information age, storing information, accessing this stored information and transmitting it to stakeholders is possible with entrepreneurial computer engineers equipped with contemporary knowledge. This task falls to the computer engineering departments of universities.
Computer engineering includes subjects that develop extremely rapidly, where the new becomes old within a few years. In the department, education at a universal level will be provided, taking into account scientific and technological developments and the needs of our country. While academic knowledge is provided on the one hand, currency will be ensured on the other. With this approach, the aim is to train knowledgeable, creative, entrepreneurial and highly qualified engineers who will produce solutions to the problems encountered in the industry and service sector.
Aim and Objective
In today's world, characterized as the information age, computers now inevitably take their place in every segment of life. The aim and objective of the Department is to provide students with the knowledge and skills that will enable them to take an innovative role in the research and development of new technologies through the effective use of computer systems during the application development stage.
Education - Training
In the Department of Computer Engineering, education lasts 4 years, excluding the optional foreign language (English) preparatory class. In the first two years, basic science and engineering courses are included. In the following two years, in addition to the compulsory basic computer engineering courses, there are technical elective courses to enable students to specialize in software, hardware or various fields of computer engineering. In addition, there are non-technical elective courses that are necessary for computer engineers.
Titles of Graduates and the Work They Do
Students who graduate from the Department of Computer Engineering are awarded a "Computer Engineer" diploma. In their working lives, department graduates can take on roles such as system analyst, software developer, database administrator, network administrator, data processing center manager and industrial system designer. In addition, they may also have the chance to pursue an academic career as a Faculty Member at universities.
Fields of Work
Graduates of the Department of Computer Engineering have the opportunity to work in various public and private institutions operating in the fields of management, education, industry, trade and services. Today, computer engineers also have the chance to work under various titles in the research and application areas of computer engineering, such as artificial intelligence, artificial neural networks, computer graphics, image processing, embedded system programming, mobile game programming and data mining, in the R&D departments of research institutions and companies.
